The Design Dialogue Series: Ayurveda for the Home

If Ayurveda is a familiar term for you, you may read this headline and go, "Ahhh..........!"

If you're not familiar but want to know more, you've come to the right place.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is defined as the science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science or knowledge) and simply put, it is a collection of wisdom designed to help people live a vibrant, positive, healthy life that maximizes their full potential.

Ayurveda is a practice that helps to foster this type of environment, to open and expand the window of time and awareness and invites balance and harmony in to the mix. There are many powerful tools for creating this expanded state of awareness and opening yourself to an overall balanced state of being. They range from physical, tangible modalities, to more esoteric, spiritual ideals. Two primary concepts behind Ayurveda are:

1.) The mind and the body are inextricably connected, and

2.) Nothing holds more power to heal and transform the mind than the body.

What this means is that our inner state of being and our surrounding environment are inextricably connected and nothing holds more power to heal and transform our inner selves than our physical state of being.

One thing I know to be true is that when you feel comfortable and relaxed in your surroundings, you are open and ready to give and receive. You are able to operate more efficiently and creatively, and you're able to communicate in a clear and concise way. Your heart rate and breath slows to a natural pace, lowering your blood pressure, soothing your stress, and setting your mind and soul at ease. This, my friends, is a healthy state of being (and what this world needs more of).

designing for your Dosha

The most important step in applying the healing power of Ayurveda is to understand your dosha. Each of us are incredibly unique with varying parts and pieces at play. The goal is to know and understand these inner workings so that you can better design your outside environment. And while the goal really is that simple, the path to get there is a bit more complex and requires a personal approach.

In this blog series, we will explore our own unique mind body types and how to apply what we learn to our surroundings in order to reach a heightened state of living and well being. Elements we will explore include:

  • The 3 doshas (defining mind-body types)
  • The 5 senses (how we experience energy)
  • The 7 elements + principles of design (the art of design)

As we move through these systems of thought and discover the ways they interact with each other, we will identify ways to create a sensual, sustainable world within which we can foster and grow the best version of ourselves, ultimately having a similar affect on this world we share as a whole.

   Clearing the clutter.

Tidying our inner and outer worlds.

Distilling down to only what is and what is meant to be.

Inspiring the change and development we seek.

Everything you want, and nothing you don't need.

Our exploration mantra and Design Dialogue end game.

I have a feeling it's gonna be a wild ride.
